Well I'm glad to see that a few people have joined but no-one's talking?. I hope this topic will get some discussion going.
Adult Content and Underage Kids on networking sites.
I'm thinking specifically of SH here but it could equally apply to Myspace or anywhere else, although it seems to be more an issue on SH because of the whole question-and-answer format.
One of the things I've started doing, since joining SH but now applying it to any website I join, is to not add anyone to a friendslist/contact list who is or claims to be under 18. Because, frankly, I really don't think it's at all appropriate for me to have online friends who are children, when I'm old enough to be their parent. Especially where the site involves or allows adult content as SH does.
I posted the following to the SH Groupies board:
There are members on the site here, and there are also plenty of questions/polls with adult content. There is growing concern that the adult content is being posted by minors
(refer to this poll... http://www.sodahead.com/poll/... )
Now I would like to ask Sodahead Administration... Do you think this is right, or is it high time to segregate adult and underage users?
Yes I am fully aware that all a child has to do is lie about their age. But think on this.
If an adult answers sexual questions to a member who is a minor, all it would take is a misunderstanding or a malicious comment for someone to report that, and the adult might find themself being under investigation as a pedophile. Now if the child has lied and claims to be over 18 then the legal blame is off the adult and on the child, so the adult could not be accused.
I think its getting to an urgent situation now, SH needs to either segregate users or else ban adult content altogether because it's not right that children of 13 years old should be asking or answering these questions.
(Yes it should be the parents responsibility - obviously the parents are not doing their job, so someone else needs to take action I think).
What I would most like to see is for SH to enforce a compulsory declaration of age (ie you have to at least say something) and if you say you're under 18 you get segregated onto a teen site. They do this in Second Life. Now okay I admit that probably 90% of the kids will lie and say they're over 18 but that doesn't matter so much because if the kid has claimed to be over 18 then adults can't get into trouble for answering their sex-related polls.
If they can't do that then I think they're gonna have to drop the adult content altogether and ban it for everyone, otherwise they're going to get into sooo much legal trouble.
Most of you here come from SH. What do y'all think?
